Problem-Solving Success Tip - Problem or Issue? Say What you Mean

Why do so many people to insist on using the term "issue" rather than "problem"? Is it political correctness running amok, or is there an important difference in meaning? We all know language is notoriously imprecise, but can help avoid misunderstandings by at least using words carefully and making sure the people were working with are using the same definition. Lets consider the issue vs. problem issue (or is it a problem) by starting with definitions.

Some dictionaries define an issue as simply a topic for discussion. Some describe it as an important question that is in dispute and must be settled. A problem is usually defined as something that is causing difficulties or a discrepancy between the current and desired state. If we accept that definition of problem, it's a synonym for the second definition of "issue".

If we take the first definition of "issue", were talking about two very different things. A problem requires action to change something undesirable. An issue does not.

If you have been tasked with leading a problem-solving effort, theres an underlying assumption that something has to change. Use the term "problem". Its unambiguous. If youre using "issue" as a synonym for problem, why risk having people think you dont mean to change anything. If you are using "issue" because you think it sounds nicer or less threatening, youre using it as a euphemism. This simply raises the question of what you're expecting to do, i.e., just talk or actually change something.

Im collecting idiomatic expressions for saying what you mean. Ive got:

  • a rose by any other name would smell as sweet (I know this isnt the exact quote, but it is the common expression)
  • call a spade a spade.
