Material Memory and NASA High Tech Plastics for Rotor Blades
Some new materials, types of plastics seem to be stronger than steel by quite a bit. Since they are made of polymer plastic blends it will be possible to add in some material memory manufacturing in the process. This would allow the rotor blades made out of this new plastic material to change shape. These materials are said to be ten times the strength of steel and three times lighter than aluminum. Such performance in materials has significant uses in aerospace
I propose manufacturing these poly plastic blades for smaller UAV craft. Designing them so they could maintain a fat leading edge when taking off and hovering but become ultra thin and streamline for higher speed flight. Also the camber of the blade would be curved on take off and flatter during higher speeds. By using this technique we could increase the take off weight and allow the UAV VTOL (Vertical Take-Off and Landing) Helicopter to move quickly into position and then hover for much longer periods of time without using up all its fuel in route, thus allowing it an increased range for use in Natural Disasters, wartime, search and rescue, surveillance or commercial applications.
Material memory manufacturing with new high-tech NASA plastics will significantly increase performance characteristics and flight agility in future aerospace designs and we should definitely be thinking here and make use of these new materials to serve our needs.

Gas Turbine Aircraft Engine Design and Operation: The Way It Works
Conventional gas turbine jet engines, like the turbofan, have been around for years. They power almost all commercial aircraft and are very reliable. Every time you board a commercial aircraft, this technology is providing safe and efficient power to get you to your destination.A gas turbine engine varies greatly in design from the engine in your...
The X-50A Dragonfly Having Trouble in Development
Imagine an unmanned aerial vehicle UAV, which can take off vertically and hover and then stopped its rotor blades and then fly forward like an airplane? Indeed, the Boeing Co. has built such aircraft and this UAV is perfect for the new Net-centric Battlespace. It is capable of surveillance in real-time and can be operated off of the ship or without...
Helicopter Anti-Torque Systems
To understand torque and its effect on helicopters we need to reference Newtons Third Law of Motion which states for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. Torque is a measure of how much force acting on an object will cause that object to rotate. In relation to helicopters, the engine turns the drive shaft, which turns the rotor. Th...
Expandable, Inflatable, Extendable Wings In UAVs and Fighter Aircraft
A recent think thank has suggested a concept of using a concept of expandable, inflatable, extendable wings in UAVs and fighter Aircraft. In this concept it was debated whether aerodynamic current methodology and design would apply. Such a concept in fact would transcend many current and future technologies. So there was some discussion on similar ...
Making a Mechanical Manta with Material Memory Manufacturing Methods
I propose building a mechanical manta ray as a Underwater Unmanned Vehicle; UUV. The manta ray will have air tanks inside of its wings and a sound device, which will also operate a sonar and an ELF communication system. The air tanks will be flexible rubber type tanks with an array of gases which when hit with a directional sound device will excite...
Tactile Strip Sensors on Leading Edge of Material Memory Airfoils
Aircraft designers have always tried to figure out the best compromise for the aircraft they build, trying to get maximum performance at both high and low airspeeds. Now with material memory components they will be able to do this. The camber of the leading edge can change to a nice fat round area for slow speeds when Short Take Off and Landing STO...
Limited Power Operations For Helicopters
Performance planning is an important part of flying a helicopter. Under certain atmospheric conditions the power available from the helicopter may be limited to the point where a normal takeoff or landing may not possible. During flight training you will practice techniques to land and takeoff in these conditions with your instructor restricting th...
