Installing An AmeriGlide Stair Lift - Part 2
This is the second half of a 2 part series on the installation of stair lifts. The first half covered the installation of the track and installing the unit onto the track. This article wraps up the installation.
The plastic chain and traveling power cable must be attached to the track next. Lay the cable and chain in the track; it will extend about halfway down. Tuck the chain into the bottom channel of the middle track; the power cable will face towards the metal. Using the included adhesive clips, secure the power cord to the wall of the track above the plastic chain. This is important because it anchors the power cable and allows free movement while the stair lift is in motion.
The unit can now be plugged into the wall. AC powered units should light up green indicating that it is getting power, if the power light does not come on then check the breakers. Battery powered units must have the battery installed first, and then the charger must be plugged in. Consult the manual on how to interpret the lights on the battery powered unit. Do not attempt to use the unit, however, because the installation is not complete.
It is necessary to install the lower limit cam, which ensures that the unit stops at the lower landing. It is attached to the top of the track by the unit, to ensure that the unit does not move during shipping. Remove it and place it at the bottom of the stairs, flush with the bottom track cover and tighten it in place. The seat should be attached to the unit next. Remove the seat from its box and remove the screws from the seat back. Use the screws to secure the seat back to the seat back bar at the desired height. Remove the 4 screws and locking washers that are on the top of the unit and secure the chair to the unit with the screws and locking washers. There are 4 leveling screws, 2 on the footrest side and 2 on the backrest side. If the seat is not level loosen the leveling screws with a hex key and level the seat before tightening them again.
After the seat is attached and leveled, you must install the upper limit cam. It installs in the same manner as the lower limit cam, but is installed butting up to the top track cover. Finish running the call control wire up the rest of the track and plug it into one of the 2 connections. The other connection is for one of the call control boxes that were in the seat box. Plug the other call control box into the connection at the bottom of the stairs. The call boxes can be installed on the floor to allow foot control of the stair lift or on the wall for hand control. After the control boxes are installed run the unit to the middle of the stairs and tighten and check all brackets and ensure that the unit is leveled.
Once the stair lift has been installed you are almost ready to go. Read the manual concerning the safe use and operation of the unit and familiarize yourself with the maintenance requirements of your unit.
