How To Balance Life And School
Introduction
It has become more common. More people are doing it every year. Going back to school is a decision that many make. Those contemplating the move often feel anxious about incorporating school into their present lives. Some have children, spouses, and full-time jobs that fill their time. How can they find the balance in time and energy to devote towards school?
The following article is composed to provide suggestions to those seeking a healthy balance of life and school.
Organization
Busy is good, but hectic is bad. Always maintain organization and outline upcoming school events (tests, quizzes, assignments, etc.) ahead of time. Stay at least one week ahead of yourself. If things come up unexpectedly, you will be better prepared and not have to scramble to get back on course.
Flexibility
The times of some events will be beyond your control, so it is important to remain flexible in your free time. Prioritize your time off so that you have allotted space in your schedule to study.
Communication
Let others know about your responsibilities. Let bosses know about your class schedule and let your teachers know about your work schedule. This will make it easier for others to understand your situation and possibly help with conflicts.
Management
It can be difficult to maintain a stress free life when you have so many obligations. The ideal situation is to completely avoid stress, but the more realistic solution is to relieve feelings and amounts of stress.
It is okay to take a break. Dont overdo it to the point of negligence, but taking some time to gather yourself is encouraged and needed.
This may seem antithetical; because it is giving you more to do, but it is important to be active. Exercise helps relieve mental and physical tension and keeps your mind clear. It doesnt matter if you kayak, jog, play soccer, do aerobics, etc. stay active.
This one will make you happy. It is okay to enjoy yourself and have a good time. Stay disciplined and do not waver from your goals, but on the weekends, nights, etc. it is okay to let your hair down and have some good times.
Realization
Dont lose sight of the big picture. You are doing remarkable things; it is not easy to balance life and school, but you can do it. Dont get too busy to stop every now and again to realize why you have made the choice and what rewards will come from your hard work.
Quick tips:
- Maintain focus on one thing at a time. Separate school from other things on your mind and vice versa. It is hard to dedicate mental energy on two things at once.
- Use calendars, phones, post-its, etc. to help you stay organized and think ahead.
- Visualize your attainment of your goals. Cross courses off that you have completed, log your grades in a book. It is important to experience your success in as many ways as possible; things happen more easily when you see them happening beforehand.
- Do not get burned out. If you feel like things are becoming too difficult then adjust your schedule (perhaps take one class a semester).
- Keep going. It is hard to regain momentum if you stop. Stay committed to your decision, and believe in your achievements.
